Hannibal Mejbri: Man United sell midfielder to Burnley for up to £9.4m

Tunisia midfielder Hannibal Mejbri has said he “can’t wait” to play at Turf Moor after leaving Manchester United for Championship side Burnley in a deal worth up to £9.4 million.

The Clarets have paid an initial £5.4m for the 21-year-old, who made 13 appearances for United after moving to Old Trafford from Monaco for £9m in 2019.

“I have played against Burnley before at Turf Moor and the atmosphere was amazing,” said Mejbri.

“I’mv very happy to be here and I can’t wait to see the fans. After speaking to the coach [Scott Parker], the project sounded good to me and hopefully we can create success.”

Hannibal Man United stats

Academy graduate Hannibal made his first-team debut against Wolves shortly after being named the club’s Reserve Player of the Year in 2021.

United loaned him to Sevilla for the second half of last season, where he made one start and five substitute appearances.

Hannibal also spent the 2022-23 season on loan in the second tier of English football, producing a goal and six assists in 41 appearances for Birmingham City.

His only United goal was a spectacular one at Old Trafford, striking from distance in a 3-1 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion in September 2023.

Burnley: Hannibal eighth signing

New Burnley manager Parker has made eight summer transfer window signings following the club’s relegation from the Premier League last season.

The deal for Hannibal includes a 50 per cent sell-on clause which will reduce over time, a buy-back clause and matching rights, according to the Manchester Evening News.

Burnley made an excellent start under Parker, winning 4-1 at Luton Town and 5-0 at home to Cardiff City in their first two league matches.

They suffered their first defeat of the season to the only goal of the game at early Championship leaders Sunderland on Saturday.
