Adrian Newey: Aston Martin beat Ferrari in $100m F1 deal – report

Adrian Newey will reportedly choose Aston Martin over Ferrari in a $100 million deal after the revered Formula One car designer leaves Red Bull next year.

Newey announced his departure in May after helping mastermind seven F1 drivers’ championships and six constructors’ titles since joining the team in 2005.

The 65-year-old has said he plans to take a break from the sport but has been heavily linked with Ferrari or Aston Martin in a potential move from 2026.

Newey ‘convinced’ by Aston Martin

Contractual obligations between Newey and Red Bull mean the switch will not be confirmed until September, according to Autosprint, which said Aston Martin boss Lawrence Stroll’s “winning vision” and “billion-dollar investment” have been the decisive factors in a four-year agreement.

“Newey has convinced himself that Stroll’s medium-to-long term plan to win the world championship is solid and concrete,” the report added.

Red Bull have dominated F1 in recent years, including Max Verstappen’s remarkable feat of 19 wins in 22 races last season, with the team triumphing in all but one outing.

Newey was also behind Sebastian Vettel winning four consecutive titles between 2010 and 2014 and contributed to multiple title wins at Williams between 1991 and 1996 and McLaren from 1997 until 2005.

Newey: F1 ‘dream’

“Ever since I was a young boy, I wanted to be a designer of fast cars,” Newey said when he revealed his Red Bull exit.

“My dream was to be an engineer in Formula One and I’ve been lucky enough to make that dream a reality.

“I feel now is an opportune moment to hand [the] baton over to others and to seek new challenges for myself.”

Broadcaster Jeremy Clarkson joked at last month’s British Grand Prix that he had a telling “exclusive” about friend Newey’s future.

“I know Adrian Newey is house-hunting in Oxfordshire, not Maranello,” Clarkson told Viaplay.
