Everton v Burnley: Kompany keeping it simple ahead of Goodison clash

Vincent Kompany is not overcomplicating Burnley’s bid to stay in the Premier League with his sole focus Saturday’s crunch meeting with fellow strugglers Everton.

The Clarets are four games unbeaten but still six points from safety with the weekend trip to Merseyside of huge importance.

Everton are seven points better off but both they and Nottingham Forest could yet have points deducted for breaches of Profit and Sustainability rules.

It all amounts to a slightly chaotic situation towards the foot of the Premier League but Kompany is trying to keep a clear mind.

He said: “Try to win as many as you can. I keep it really simple. You can overcomplicate it with all the maths.

“If we just focus on winning the next game and do that consistently, that is the only thing. It might be a cliche but we have experienced it over two seasons at very different ends of the league. It is very much the same mindset.”

Everton are in woeful form having not won in 13 league games, although they did pick up a credible 1-1 draw at Newcastle on Tuesday night.

Kompany added: “We are at a stage of the season where we have still got everything to fight for and that’s all that matters.

“Every Premier League game is tough. There is no such thing as an easy game for us. We just have to prepare well, make sure we are aware of their strengths and make sure that we see opportunities for us to exploit and seize them.

“I have not delved too much into the fact they are on a winless streak. It’s not really relevant to me. It is the game itself that matters.”

Despite their season-long struggles, Kompany has maintained a positive approach and he says everyone is “ready to go” for Saturday.

“We need to assess everyone,” he said. “We had two games in quick succession. Whoever is ready and fit, and we think is most likely to help us with the game, they will start. Everyone is ready to go.”
