Kompany: I won’t jeopardise Burnley’s future with January spending spree

Burnley will not attempt to spend their way out of relegation trouble and leave the club financially “beyond repair”, according to boss Vincent Kompany.

The Clarets have struggled on their return to the Premier League and head into Saturday’s trip to Fulham six points from safety.

The January window is under a fortnight away but Kompany is adamant he will not spend big and put the club’s future in jeopardy.

The Belgian said: “The regret we could have [if we spend too much money on transfers] is if we put the club into a position where it is beyond repair.

“Last year, the fact the club went down and then straight back up was in itself a small miracle.

“You have to count your blessings sometimes and just make sure that we are continuously improving.

“I will tell you now, my goal is that within three or four years’ time this club is not just a team that is surviving but is a team that can thrive in the Premier League.”

Burnley can call on striker Lyle Foster for the trip to Craven Cottage.

The South African was a surprise inclusion in the squad for last Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at home to Everton after spending over a month on the sidelines addressing the recurrence of a mental health issue.

And, although Foster came on at half-time, Kompany is happy to take his reintroduction slowly.

He added: “I am still very cautious in the sense that, as part of his rehabilitation, this is just a step. His natural environment includes football and the goal is to put him back in his natural environment and so I am a little bit careful with that.

“But playing makes him happy, and when he is happy he is able to do really good things for us. Obviously we don’t just rely on Lyle, but it is good for us to have a key player back.”
