Car experts have sounded the alarm over hundreds of drivers erroneously facing charges and fines while driving in London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ). VRM Swansea’s Plates4Less team has been flooded with inquiries over the past three months as many drivers found themselves slapped with unwarranted fines. The team has been actively assisting clients in challenging and overturning ULEZ charges that were wrongly issued.
The ULEZ, which recently expanded to cover greater London within the M25 motorway perimeter, enforces emissions-based charges on owners of non-compliant vehicles. Although announced in 2015, the scheme only came into effect in September 2020. In June, approximately 4,000 ULEZ fines were issued daily. Plates4Less experts argue that a significant portion of these fines were unjust, citing Transport for London’s (TfL) slow update of their vehicle database from DVLA records, which accurately link number plates to the correct vehicle details.
According to experts, daily updates to the database would ensure that these vehicles are recognized as ULEZ compliant. However, the current system relies on a basic non-DVLA database, which informs TfL of a vehicle’s age based on the number plate’s age indicator. If a vehicle carries an older personalized number plate than its actual age, the cameras may misinterpret it as an older vehicle, resulting in incorrect charges.
To assist motorists unfairly ensnared by this situation, the number plate and motoring experts at VRM Swansea’s Plates4Less have compiled a practical guide. Their template can be utilised to challenge TfL or any other authority in cases of mistaken charges or fines.
Antony Clark of Plates4Less explained, “As a trusted supplier of private number plates, people often come to us with their questions, and we’re happy to help. We have found that Transport for London is not updating their vehicles database from DVLA records often enough”.
The guide is available for reference online at www.plates4less.co.uk/ulez. Plates4Less has released various guides that may be helpful to individuals interested in private plates or motorists in general.
London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone has sparked controversy, even impacting residents within the zone. While driving a ULEZ-compliant vehicle is the best way to avoid charges or fines, this isn’t always feasible due to factors such as the cost of electric vehicles and complex rules. Antony emphasized, “The issue remains that the system isn’t perfect and the database updates slowly, which is why some motorists who are driving compliant vehicles are receiving charges and fines that they shouldn’t be. This solution proposed by Plates4Less should allow Transport for London to update their files, solving the problem.
At Plates4Less, the team recognizes the many benefits a new number plate can bring to drivers and hopes their guide will help motorists navigate ULEZ effectively and avoid unnecessary fines.
