In anticipation of upcoming modifications, the DVLA has taken steps to ban specific number plate combinations from circulation. The changes are slated to take effect this week.
Commencing on Friday (September 1), the DVLA is unveiling its latest registration plates, denoted as ’73’ plates. Annually, two sets of registration plates are introduced.
This year, the ’23’ number plate was introduced in March, while the ’73’ plates are scheduled for issuance later this week.
With each new release, a substantial number of registration plates are brought into circulation, making it increasingly likely that certain combinations could unintentionally form or resemble offensive or inappropriate words.
To maintain the road’s decorum and promote socially acceptable plates, the DVLA takes the proactive measure of banning an extensive roster of plates prior to their public issuance.
Jon Kirkbright, the sales director at Platehunter, initiated a Freedom of Information request to the DVLA, seeking the disclosure of the exact list of banned number plates ahead of the ’73’ release. With over 11 years of experience in the buying and selling of private number plates, Jon is an expert in his field.
Reflecting on the confidential catalogue of prohibited number plates, Jon commented, “The DVLA preempts the release of numerous banned number plates, a fact that the general public is typically unaware of. It’s not surprising considering the vast number of plates launched twice a year. It’s almost inevitable that a few will inadvertently spell out or nearly spell out offensive words.”
Jon acknowledged that while some cases may be borderline, he comprehends the DVLA’s decision to exercise additional caution. He attributed this precautionary approach to the DVLA’s desire to safeguard a substantial revenue stream.
Jon emphasized that biannual number plate releases also bring forth a multitude of highly sought-after combinations. He asserted that names remain the most coveted choice for plates.
Boasting an inventory of over 56 million personalized number plates for sale, Jon affirmed Platehunter’s commitment to affordability. Plates are available for purchase starting from £39 plus VAT and the transfer fee.
