Liverpool city centre
Liverpool city centre is our top choice for student-friendly places to live. It’s big, open, friendly and there’s always something going on.
It’s also close to class and has excellent public transport links with Lime Street and Liverpool Central train stations close by. Cycling is relatively safe and you can walk to most places.
Traffic can get busy at peak times but once rush hour is over, things quieten down. Pavements are wide, there are cycle lanes and plenty of buses so it has fewer downsides than many city centres.
We wouldn’t often recommend living in a city centre location but Liverpool is one of the most affordable cities to live in.
It’s very possible to live as a student in the city centre and live a good life without breaking the bank.
There are plenty of pubs, bars, cafes, restaurants, galleries, nightclubs, clubs, museums and parks to enjoy too.
If you want to make the most of your time as a student here, the city centre has to be the most convenient place to live.
Shorter distances to class, shorter distances to nightlife, supermarkets and shops on your doorstep and the train stations just down the road.

Baltic Triangle
Baltic Triangle, or ‘the Baltic’ is where the creatives live and hang out. The musicians, writers, artists, photographers and anyone who loves to be free to create.
Fortunately, the Baltic manages to avoid many of the cliches of other creative areas. It’s a genuinely cool place to hang out with no pretentiousness and not too many hipsters around either.
It’s the kind of place to while away an afternoon in a coffee shop or just hanging out thinking about life, the universe and everything.
It’s full of old warehouses and converted industrial buildings that are now venues, bars and galleries. It’s also full of cafes, bistros and places to go and things to do.
Baltic Triangle is within walking distance of class and the city centre, so you have all the conveniences on your doorstep with a little creativity thrown in.
So far, Baltic Triangle has avoided the typical gentrification. While it is being renovated and improved, it has managed to keep its soul, which is why it’s so popular.
The Knowledge Quarter
The Knowledge Quarter is just east of Ropewalks and is where the University of Liverpool and Liverpool John Moores University is based.
It’s also where you’ll find the Astrophysics Research Institute, the Research Technology Building, the Institute of Clinical Sciences, Liverpool Science Park and other knowledge related buildings.
It’s a great place to be, close to class and a short walk from the city centre, Liverpool ONE, Liverpool Cathedral, Royal Albert Dock and the other city highlights.
The area isn’t as characterful as the Baltic or other areas of the city. There are lots of newer buildings and open spaces, but it has a lot of convenience and is still close to the action.
It’s a student-friendly neighbourhood and ideal for spending days in the library or studying as well as enjoying the galleries and open spaces.
If hanging around with creatives isn’t your thing and you would rather bump into an astrophysicist than a guitarist, perhaps the Knowledge Quarter is where you would like to live.
It’s not all lab coats and pencils in pockets though. There’s a lot more to this area than that!
Ropewalks
Ropewalks is another top destination for students. Located just south of the city centre, between Liverpool ONE and the Baltic, Ropewalks is close to everything and not far from class either.
It’s another student-friendly neighbourhood in Liverpool city centre that manages to make you feel welcome.
It has a wide range of property types and is full of shops, bars, cafes, pubs, Chinatown, Bluecoat arts centre, FACT multimedia studios, old converted warehouses and more.
It’s also where a lot of nightlife happens in Liverpool. The pubs, clubs, venues, galleries and more provide plenty of entertainment and a lively vibe at the weekend.
For those who like Asian food, Chinatown has plenty of options from noodles to Vietnamese Pho bars.
Ropewalks isn’t all built around its nightlife, but after dark is when this area really comes alive.
There’s plenty of people, lots going on and a genuine friendly vibe where people just want to dress up, go out and have a good time.
