Lancashire’s woman in business – Saira Hussain represents Ethnic Minority Business owners at the Houses of Parliament.

Saira Hussain runs a female led architectural, planning and property practice with offices in Burnley, Blackburn and Manchester, she is also the employment, self employment and pensions policy chair at the FSB.

Being an avid supported of the Ethnic Minority Business Owners (APPG) which aims to bring together parliamentarians from all parties and both Houses with key players in Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) businesses to promote the growth of successful BAME businesses across the UK. A key aim is to promote an inclusive national strategy of policy, support and resources to enable the growth of BAME owned businesses for the benefit of the overall UK economy. Saira attended the celebratory reception at Parliament, which aims to mark the major contribution of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic Business owners who are making an impact across almost every sector of the UK’s economy.

It was also an opportunity to launch the APPG’s forward plan including a Manifesto for Inclusive Economic Growth.

The event is was held primarily for MPs and business community leaders from diverse Ethnic Minority business networks from across the UK. Stakeholders from a range of industry sectors and the finance industry were also in attendance.

Speakers included Abena Opponh Assar MP, Shadow Exchequer Secretory, Sarah Olney MP, Professor Ram and Kevin Hollinrake MP.

Saira commented ‘I myself come from a minority background and have worked in a male dominated industry for the past 10 years, this movement is personal to me, I believe to address the barriers faced by ethnic minority business and to help realise their entrepreneurial potential, dedicated leadership will be required from the government and support on a local level, close collaboration and events such as these will bring about meaningful change.
