Andrew Turner, chairman of Chorley Group, is planning to raise £25,000 for the ‘Inspire’ Chorley Youth Zone by climbing more than 17,000ft to the Everest Base Camp in October.
Andrew, who is one of the founder patrons of the Youth Zone, says it’s definitely the scariest challenge he’s taken on.
“I’m 59 and some people think I am a little foolish for attempting something of this scale at my age and I’ll admit it is a little scary,” says Andrew, whose £130-million-turnover Chorley Group he founded in 1989.
“Climbing 17,600ft to the base camp of the highest mountain in the world is going to be tough. Just the words Mount Everest make the hairs on your neck stand up. I know this isn’t going to be easy.
“But it’s a goal I was determined to reach before I’m 60. And I want to do it to raise as much money as possible for the Youth Zone.”
And, as founding Chairman of ‘Inspire’ Chorley Youth Zone, Andrew has taken a lead role in securing more than £2.5million of investment to guarantee its long-term success and sustainability.
“I am sure there will be tough moments during the trek but the thought of all the team and young people who attend the Youth Zone will keep me going. The passion of the staff and enjoyment the young people get from the place are the things that drive me on. We recently very proudly announced the news that since opening Anti-Social behaviour in the Chorley area has reduced by an astonishing 49% – we need to keep this up & ensure Inspire continues to be the place to go for young people locally.”
