Conlon celebrates its 55 years with £55m

Preston-based Conlon Construction is celebrating winning heritage projects totalling £55m over the past 10 years after the company was confirmed as the main contractor on the £1.9m scheme to repair the Winter Gardens in Blackpool.

Awarded through the public sector procurement vehicle, the North West Construction Hub (NWCH), the project has tipped Conlon over the £55m mark coinciding with the company’s 55th anniversary just a few months ago.

Conlon has delivered a wide variety of refurbishment and restoration schemes on Grade I and II listed buildings since the company’s first major heritage scheme at the former Preston Catholic College in 1988 – 1991. Conlon’s experience includes a previous project on the entrance to the Winter Gardens in 2011. The latest contract will see the firm replace the Spanish Hall Roof and restore the Coronation Street façade of the Grade II listed building.

Other recent Conlon heritage projects include the Grade I listed Heaton Hall in Manchester and the Grade I listed National Trust property, Gawthorpe Hall, near Burnley. The constructor is also currently on site of the Grade II listed Wythenshawe Hall in Manchester as well as the Grade II listed Preston Markets.

Michael Conlon, chairman at Conlon Construction, said: “Reaching the £55m milestone is an amazing achievement and is particularly exciting to do it in our 55th anniversary year. We’ve worked hard and invested in the team to build an enviable track record and reputation in the heritage sector over the past decade. We started with smaller projects but since having developed our expertise we’ve had numerous opportunities to work on some truly iconic buildings, particularly as part of the NWCH framework.

“Heritage work can be really challenging but we always take great care in delivering our projects which is also part of our commitment as a member of Considerate Constructors Scheme. We respect our built environment heritage and are dedicated to extending its service life and sustainability for future generations.”
