One person has been killed and five others seriously injured in a three-car motorway crash in the early hours this morning.
Emergency services were called to reports of a serious collision on the M65 near Burnley at about 03.40am.
Lancashire Police expect both carriageways to remain closed for some time between junction 8 (Hapton) and 10 (Burnley).
There is congestion along the diversion route, which is the A679 Accrington Road. Bus services to and from Colne are also disrupted.
A Lancashire Police spokesperson said: “At around 3:37am we were called to reports of a collision at Junction 9 of the M65 involving 3 vehicles.
“Emergency services attended and five people were taken to hospital with serious injuries, one person has very sadly died.
“Our thoughts are with their loved ones at this incredibly distressing time, and they are being supported by officers.
“The M65 is currently closed in both directions from J8 to J10 and we anticipate that the road will be closed for some time.”
