Prof. Dr. Yunus Aydın: Spearheading Advances in Spinal Health with Groundbreaking Microdiscectomy and Spinal Canal Stenosis Treatments

Prof. Dr. Yunus Aydın is revolutionising the field of spinal healthcare, delivering unparalleled medical services and heralding a new phase in the alleviation of back pain through his dedicated professional life and vast expertise in spinal surgeries.

Accruing a substantial track record with over 2800 aneurysm operations and in excess of 400 AVM treatments, Prof. Dr. Yunus Aydın is distinguished by his personalised care strategy for each patient, emphasising their contentment and health as paramount throughout their therapeutic journey.

Innovative Yunus Aydın Method

The Yunus Aydın Method, conceptualised by Prof. Dr. Yunus Aydın, marks a significant leap forward in spinal surgical practices, providing precise interventions for spinal stenosis and spinal cord compression sans the use of metal, thus ensuring minimal harm. This method comprises same-day surgical solutions for herniated discs, non-surgical remedies for cervical disc herniation, and efficacious treatments for spinal canal stenosis resulting from neck calcification.

Adopting a unilateral method for bilateral decompression in spinal stenosis cases, Prof. Dr. Yunus Aydın has adeptly utilised this technique in over 4,000 instances over the past 23 years. “Our goal is to preserve the natural structure and mobility of the spine while providing more room to squeezed spinal nerves,” he states. He points out the prevalence of spinal stenosis in the ageing population and the common preference among surgeons for instrumented methods, which involve extensive, invasive surgeries, hindering swift recovery to normalcy. He advocates for less invasive, shorter surgeries for the elderly to prevent postoperative complications, stressing the need for patients to be mobile immediately after the surgery.

“By using a unilateral approach, on the symptomatic side, we can decompress the spinal canal stenosis and clean disc herniations effectively, minimizing the risk of ‘Adjacent Segment Disease’ and ensuring a faster return to normal life for our patients.” This innovative technique is also applicable to multi-level stenosis via the same incision, without affecting the spine’s ability to bear weight.

Natural Window Creation on the Spine’s Side

In the treatment of spinal stenosis, Prof. Dr. Yunus Aydın utilises a novel approach that circumvents the complications often associated with the traditional screw and rod systems. These conventional methods, though effective for traumatic fractures or spinal conditions induced by tumour growth, can disrupt the spine’s biomechanics, leading to further surgical interventions.

With a wealth of experience from conducting over 10,000 surgeries, Prof. Dr. Yunus Aydın’s technique involves crafting a natural window on one side of the spine to perform necessary procedures without compromising spinal stability. This approach maintains the mobility of the joints and prevents the emergence of adjacent segment disease, enabling patients to be discharged within a day following their spinal surgery.

Enhanced Recovery with Minimally Invasive Techniques

“The key to successful spinal surgery lies in respecting the integrity of the spine’s supporting structures,” Prof. Dr. Yunus Aydın elucidates. Leveraging advanced surgical tools such as the high-speed drill and Kairison bone cutter, these operations can be carried out in a way that is less invasive, minimises bleeding, and increases efficiency. Additionally, by retaining the yellow ligament in microdiscectomy procedures, minimal tissue damage is ensured, thereby reducing nerve adhesions and the likelihood of unsuccessful back surgery syndrome.

Patients who undergo these avant-garde spinal surgeries can anticipate considerably shorter hospitalisations, with many being discharged either on the same day or the day after surgery. They typically resume their everyday activities within 15 days, highlighting the minimally invasive nature of these surgical techniques.
