In a stirring short film, Richard Worrell offers a glimpse into his life within a flat complex in one of England’s neediest locales, termed “the ice blocks”, and the transformative effect of a £7.9 million community enhancement programme.
This venture has modernised over a thousand flats within 21 skyscrapers in Walsall’s residential estates with top-notch energy-saving solutions. These upgrades have elevated living standards and rendered heating costs more manageable for the tenants.
In collaboration with Soltherm and Surefire Management Services, Watmos Community Homes has garnered essential funding from the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund (SHDF), with a notable £7.9 million directed towards this project, setting a record for the largest investment in such an initiative.
Richard reflects on the substantial impact this investment has had on the community’s vulnerable segments. “I was involved with the estate, more than 20 years ago. And I worked with residents, and we used to call these places ‘the ice blocks.’ So that says it all really, doesn’t it?”
The documentary highlights the project’s significant influence on the community’s living conditions.
“You noticed the difference instantly once the thermal cladding was in place, it just made it so noticeably more comfortable. It just makes this place so much nicer to live in.” Richard Worrell – Resident
This film charts the transition from chilly, inhospitable environments to warm, vibrant habitats that endow Walsall’s fuel-deprived residents with health, comfort, and energy. The Watmos Regeneration Project is showcased on the official website of Soltherm.
