Wilko discount store in Nelson to close next week

Wilko store in Nelson’s Pendle Rise Shopping Centre is due to close.

The discount chain has been grappling with financial woes and recently announced it would close 52 of its stores as it navigates the administration process.

The business has approximately 400 stores in its portfolio, with a workforce of 12,500 employees.

Valiant efforts

Efforts to save the business have been valiant, with administrators exploring potential buyers.

But retail giant B&M has stepped in, inking a £13 million deal to acquire up to 51 Wilko stores.

While this lifeline offers hope for some locations, others are destined for closure.

The closures are scheduled to commence next week, with the Nelson store among the casualties.

Next Tuesday and Thursday, the doors will shut permanently at these and several other locations, leading to a staggering 1,016 redundancies across various roles, including warehouse and service staff.

Union remains optimistic

Despite the imminent closures, the GMB union remains optimistic, reporting that PwC (PricewaterhouseCoopers), the appointed administrator, continues to collaborate with a potential bidder for a significant portion of the business.

The union expressed hope that this effort would yield positive results, emphasising its commitment to supporting the cause.
