Liverpool-based health insurance provider, Medicash, proudly announces a significant milestone of reaching 500,000 policyholders, accompanied by a charitable initiative to support the National Health Service (NHS).
Having originated in Liverpool’s charitable hospitals in 1871, Medicash holds the distinction of being the UK’s oldest and largest corporate health cash plan provider. The company’s recent announcement of reaching half a million policyholders signifies rapid and substantial growth in recent years.
In 2022, Medicash experienced its most impressive year of expansion, with a new policy sold on average every two minutes. This extraordinary milestone reflects a customer base that has more than doubled in less than five years. Alongside this remarkable growth, Medicash has received national recognition in the industry, securing prestigious accolades such as National Insurer of the Year and Best UK Healthcare Plan Provider in the early months of 2023.
To commemorate this historic achievement, Medicash’s charitable division, the Medicash Foundation, embarks on a monumental £2.1 million project to support NHS hospitals and facilities throughout the North West region over the next four years.
The first recipient of funding within Medicash’s latest charitable endeavor is the newly established Clatterbridge Cancer Centre in Liverpool. Situated in the city’s unofficial Knowledge Quarter and constructed in 2020, the Centre offers state-of-the-art cancer treatments to patients in Merseyside and Cheshire. As part of Medicash’s four-year project, the Foundation announces a partnership with the Clatterbridge Cancer Charity to finance a new role for a Trainee Research Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP), dedicated to supporting the Centre’s pioneering clinical trials and research.
The appointed individual will play a crucial part in the Centre’s research and development team, facilitating the delivery of groundbreaking cancer treatments to bolster the ongoing fight against the disease.
“The remarkable growth Medicash has experienced in recent years is a testament to the value we place on good health and well-being in today’s world,” states Sue Weir, Chief Executive of Medicash and Medicash Foundation Trustee. “Our goal is to provide easy and affordable access to healthcare for as many people as possible, and I am immensely proud to see this ethos lead us to this incredible milestone. The same ethos drives this project, and I am thrilled to have the support of our policyholders and the wider community in funding vital services within our NHS.”
Emma Whitby, Head of Research Nursing at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, expresses, “As research nurses, our role revolves around providing holistic care to our patients—adapting to their needs while delivering cutting-edge treatments. The funding provided by Medicash for our new Trainee Research ANP equips our team with advanced skills, enabling us to provide highly qualified healthcare practitioners who can expedite the treatment process and ensure patients return home sooner. This donation is invaluable in enhancing the patient experience, presenting an exciting opportunity for our entire team.”
By commencing their latest funding initiative in their Liverpool hometown, Medicash pays homage to their rich history. In 2017, the company received the prestigious Freedom of the City of Liverpool in recognition of their longstanding contributions to healthcare and commitment to charitable giving since 1871.
“This newly established position at the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre is only the beginning of our project,” affirms Sue Weir. “We eagerly anticipate collaborating with more hospitals across the North West in the coming months to fund additional positions, and I am excited to witness the incredible impact they will have within their local communities and beyond.”
