Ready, Steady, GO: Local Business and Homebuilder Raise Donations for New School Track

St Thomas’ Primary School in Barrowford has received much-need support from family-run regeneration business Peel L&P and local award-winning homebuilder Northstone, to fund and create a brand-new sports running track on the school field.

The substantial donation from Northstone and Peel L&P will enable the school to level up its athletics and fitness activities and implement new initiatives, such as the ‘Daily Mile’ – a movement which sees children walk or run a mile every day and that is credited with significant health benefits.

Commenting on the donation, Jo Duckworth, headteacher of St Thomas’ Primary School said: “Currently the weather dictates how often the children get to use the playing field which is more often than not, too muddy and wet so the new all-weather track will be a real game changer for us. Our pupils will have all year access to the field; it will be something that will benefit the lives and improve the fitness of pupils here now and for generations to come. We really can’t thank Northstone and Peel L&P enough for their incredibly generous donations which sees a fully completed 160 metre track installed!”

“We are keeping everything crossed that once the contractors, CB Groundscapes Ltd, make headway, we will be able to hold this year’s sports day on the new track too which will be welcome relief to parents, pupils and teachers!”

Northstone is the homebuilder behind ‘Keld’, a newly created neighbourhood made up of 239 new, innovative and sustainable homes, located a short distance from St Thomas’ Primary School. Keld has been incredibly popular with couples and families alike, thanks to its wide-variety of homes and house types meaning there’s something for buyers at all stages of the property ladder.  Situated nearby to Nelson and Colne College and Victoria Park, Keld, comprises two-, three- and four-bedroom homes priced from £275,000 for a three-bed.

Chrissie Bramhall, Community Partnerships Manager at Northstone added: “We’re delighted that our latest development is able to support St Thomas’ Primary School with this donation; the school is at the heart of the Barrowford community and just a stone’s throw away from Keld, making it highly likely children from our community will be pupils at the school.

We prioritise landscaping and open spaces on our developments, knowing what a difference fresh air and a good run around can make to an individual’s wellbeing, which is why we jumped at the chance to sponsor this new running track! We are looking forward to seeing the new track in place and being enjoyed by the pupils.”

Both Northstone and Peel L&P have a long-history of supporting local projects, with both company’s seeking to meaningfully support and engage with communities and partners in which they have a presence.

Elinor George, Senior Planning Manager at Peel L&P concluded: “Northstone and Peel L&P are both committed to supporting our local communities through meaningful impact and engagement. The creation of this new running track will be a fantastic addition to St Thomas’s Primary School and we’re very proud to have supported this project for the pupils to enjoy and hopefully support their health and wellbeing for years to come.”
