A Lancashire-based wallpaper manufacturer has broadened its product offering with investment in new machinery, thanks to support from Lloyds Bank.
Surface Print, based in Accrington, manufactures luxury wallcoverings for customers around the world, through customers including Colefax & Fowler, Osborne & Little, Romo and Designers Guild.
It specialises in surface printing, a technique pioneered in Lancashire in 1838, which creates a hand-painted effect. It is one of just a few manufacturers in the world to offer this printing process.
Founded in the 1880s, Surface Print is a family-run business, now led by managing director James Watson – the great grandson of founder Walter Watson.
Following an increase in demand during the lockdown DIY boom, the business saw sales for wallpaper grow significantly. James identified an opportunity to capitalise on this demand by diversifying Surface Print’s offering, through introducing the new techniques of screen printing and gravure, an intaglio printing process that uses engraving.
Requiring new, specialised equipment, the business approached Lloyds Bank, securing a £1.6m asset finance facility to support their investment in a £1.8m printing machine.
Now, the business is focused on deepening its market share and offering customers even greater choice through these new capabilities, as it builds a pipeline of orders.
James Watson, managing director of Surface Print, said: “This investment marks the next step in our growth plan.
“Thanks to the ongoing support from Lloyds Bank, we’ve been able to expand our business and equip it with the best machinery possible to ensure we can offer customers the most extensive range of wallcoverings to suit every style and taste. We’re excited to roll out our new techniques and make sure wallpaper continues to get the attention it deserves!”
Garry Birchall, relationship manager at Lloyds Bank, said: “Surface Print has been a staple in Lancashire since its opening in the 1990s. We’re proud to see its continued growth and provide the support needed to keep the business thriving for generations to come.
“We will remain by the side of businesses across the North West and the UK as they work to reach their full growth potential.”
