Abigail Stansfield, a skilled Toolmaker based at BAE Systems’ site in Samlesbury, Lancashire has been chosen from hundreds to represent the UK in the EuroSkills 2020 competition.
The biennial competition will see 30 European countries compete in over 35 different skill areas.
25 of the most talented young people from the UK, including Abigail, will compete in over 20 skills for the opportunity to win a gold medal in their chosen skill.
Abigail first joined BAE Systems in September 2016 as an Advanced Engineering Apprentice.
Each year, BAE systems takes on around 250 apprentices in the Air sector, with many based at our sites across Lancashire including Warton and Samlesbury.
Abigail specialises in machine tooling and entered into the CNC Milling category of the competition.
The competition involved her using these skills to draw up and model parts onto a software package and programming them ready to be milled.
Abigail said: “I am thrilled to have been chosen to compete at EuroSkills with everyone putting their trust in me to represent the country in a world-class competition.
“I was blown away to be selected to compete at the national finals, so to be chosen for an international competition is amazing.”
“I am so proud of myself for what I have achieved and I am really look forward to competing for my country!”
Abigail also competed in the national finals of WorldSkills UK last year at the Birmingham NEC where she took home the bronze medal in her category and secured a position as part of ‘Squad UK’.
Being part of Squad UK presents her with the opportunity to compete in the 2021 WorldSkills finals in Shanghai.
