Conlon Construction screening event flags potential prostate cancer in Lancashire men

Following the success of its first free prostate cancer screening event, Conlon Construction recently hosted a second event to detect the early signs of cancer in Lancashire men.

Held in partnership with Preston-based prostate cancer support organisation, The Walnut Group, the event saw a turnout of more than 500 men from across Lancashire and the Fylde, including Preston, Chorley, Leyland, Blackburn, Burnley, Blackpool and Lytham – double the demand of the inaugural public screening.

Of those tested at the event at Preston North End, 52 men received letters suggesting that they should seek further advice from their doctors.

Prostate cancer effects one in nine men in their lifetime and among Afro-Caribbean males, this figure increases to one in four.

Neil Conlon of Conlon Construction said: “We’re so pleased to have seen even more men turn out to be tested.

“More than 10,000 die from the disease every year. Early detection is key to increasing the chances of successful treatment and we hope that these events will ultimately save lives.

“The popularity of these events gives us the drive and determination to continue what we do. We have plans in place to deliver another screening event in Preston and also one in Manchester. In doing so, we hope to reach as many men as possible in order to improve their chances of surviving prostate cancer – as well as break down the stigma surrounding it.

“I would encourage all men, especially those who are over 50 or have a family history of prostate cancer, to consult their GPs or to join us at one of our upcoming screenings and help us to reduce the current statistics.”

Walnut Group chairman, Colin Piddington, added: “We are very grateful to Conlon Construction, not only for their sponsorship of the Prostate Specific Antigen testing sessions, without which they would not happen, but for their help in promoting our group and the work that we do with patients and their families.”
