Chorley Council appoints WYG to produce Highways and Transport Strategy

Chorley Council has appointed professional services firm WYG to produce a highways and transport strategy to address future challenges associated with congestion, travel choice, and sustainability.

To create the strategy, WYG will review current transport provision and practice, highlighting the potential impact of new jobs and housing emerging from the Central Lancashire Local Plan, a joint effort between Chorley, Preston, and South Ribble to develop land over the next 15 years.

The review will also identify schemes to provide the necessary capacity and connectivity between major trip generators to cope with the impact of future development. This includes investigating links between major roads such as the M6, M61, and M65 motorways, as well as the local road network and the five train stations in the district of Chorley. The strategy will then determine a combination of measures to alleviate congestion and promote sustainable travel in those hot spots.

Leader of Chorley Council Alistair Bradley, said: “We are delighted to have WYG onboard and are keen to work with them in identifying what transport interventions are required across the district in the next 10 to 15 years. This commission will provide us with valuable insight and evidence to inform future decisions to secure investment in further local transport improvements to facilitate this growth.”

Ben King, Associate and project manager at WYG, said: “Growth and development have the potential to affect the transport network, so we look forward to working with the council to mitigate that impact by drawing out key issues and opportunities for the district between now and the Local Plan coming to an end in 2036. We have a strong track record in working with local authorities to help them understand these complexities.”
