Friends unite over a beer to celebrate life and Rosemere appeal

When it comes to raising a glass to toast “good health”, a couple of friends from Euxton have more reason than most to meet for a pint at the pub.

Mates John Clegg and Chris Tulloch grew up together in the area around Euxton’s The Talbot, which became their local.

When the pub’s lease recently became available, John and Chris, who are also partners in and directors of Blind Tiger Inns, a chain of 12 North West bars, decided to take it on to add to their portfolio and together with Star Pubs & Bars, invested £320,000 in its refurbishment.

And now, after one of their friends recovered from cancer following treatment at Rosemere Cancer Centre, they have launched a new, very special cask ale on the pub’s drinks menu – Rosebeer.

Rosebeer is a palatable dry, fruity ale and for every pint sold, there is a 10p donation to Rosemere Cancer Foundation’s 20 Years Anniversary Appeal as thank you for treatment their friend received.

John said: “I still consider The Talbot my local. There always was and still is a group of us that regularly meets up there. When the pub’s lease became available, it was too good an opportunity for us to miss and it has now given us the chance to fundraise for Rosemere through our new Rosebeer, which we will be promoting especially over the festive period, the busiest time of the year in the pub industry.”

Cathy Skidmore, Rosemere Cancer Foundation’s corporate fundraising manager, said: “We are very grateful to John and Chris for naming a beer after us and selling it at their pub to help us raise funds. Obviously, I wouldn’t want to encourage people to over-indulge but it must be said, there’s nothing better, especially in the midst of winter, than getting together with friends for a drink and a good chat.”

Rosemere Cancer Foundation’s 20 Years Anniversary Appeal launched in March. It currently stands at just over half way to its £1.5 million goal to fund a trio of ground-breaking projects celebrating the 20th anniversary of the opening of Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust’s Rosemere Cancer Centre at the Royal Preston Hospital. The centre is Lancashire and South Cumbria’s local specialist cancer treatment centre, providing all radiotherapy treatment, as well as specialist diagnostics and surgery along with complex chemotherapy and other highly specialised care.

As well as supporting Rosemere Cancer Centre, Rosemere Cancer Foundation funds projects to bring world class cancer treatment and services to another eight hospitals in Lancashire and South Cumbria where cancer patients are treated, including Chorley & South Ribble Hospital, where it funded a new chemotherapy day unit that opened earlier this year.
