Smurfit Kappa Launches Recycling Scheme to Raise Funds for East Lancashire Hospice

A new recycling scheme operated by Smurfit Kappa in Blackburn is set to raise much needed funds for East Lancashire Hospice.

Residents and businesses are invited to bring their unwanted cardboard and paper to a dedicated charity skip located outside Smurfit Kappa’s recycling depot on the Whitebirk Industrial Estate just off the A6119 in Blackburn. Smurfit Kappa will then make a cash donation for every tonne of cardboard and paper material that is put into the skip. Business and personal recycling can all be included. Businesses with larger volumes who normally deliver their material to the depot itself are also being offered the option to donate their rebates to East Lancashire Hospice instead.

East Lancashire Hospice serves the population of Blackburn, Darwen and Hyndburn and the Ribble Valley and offers many different services for the people with life-limiting illnesses. The Hospice relies heavily on the generosity of its local communities to reach the £3.5 million needed to provide a special way of caring, but every little donation can make a real difference. For example £5 will provide a three-course meal for a patient, £10 will provide a patient with a complimentary therapy session and £240 will provide 20 hours of care in a patient’s own home.

East Lancashire Hospice Fundraising Manager, Sharon Crymble said, “Although it costs in excess of £3.5 million each year to provide this valuable service, our patients and their loved ones tells us the difference it makes is priceless. We are extremely grateful to Smurfit Kappa for providing us with a means to raise funds and urge our community to take advantage of the new recycling scheme that is free to use, and at the same provides much-needed funds that go back into helping local people at a time when they need it.”

“We are extremely proud to be supporting East Lancashire Hospice with our recycling scheme. As well as generating vital funds for our local hospice, this initiative provides a free and environmentally-responsible recycling solution for local businesses and residents. We are sure the local community will want to join us in spreading the word, and recycling for this very worthy cause,” said Ian Ledson, General Manager, Smurfit Kappa Recycling in Blackburn.

Smurfit Kappa works with both public and private sector organisations to develop recovery solutions to meet their recycling requirements. Its recycling operations source and recover cardboard, paper and plastics. Customers can deliver material direct or collections can be arranged by Smurfit Kappa, dependent on volumes. Cardboard and paper material supplied to Smurfit Kappa is recycled into brown paper which is used to make new packaging materials.

If you’d like to support East Lancashire Hospice, please bring your unwanted cardboard and paper to Smurfit Kappa Recycling on the Whitebirk Industrial Estate in Blackburn where you will find the Hospice skip.
