Law firm outlines commitment to create dementia friendly community

Lancashire law firm Birchall Blackburn Law has shown its commitment to raising awareness of dementia after becoming a founding member of an action group.

As a member of the South Ribble Dementia Action Alliance, the firm which has offices in locations including Preston, Leyland and Chorley, has pledged to help transform the quality of life of people living with dementia in the South Ribble area and the hundreds of people who care for them.

The purpose of the alliance is to turn South Ribble into a Dementia Friendly Borough and the group will provide a forum and space for organisations to come together and collaborate on key actions and priorities.

Anna-Marie Knipe, Partner at Birchall Blackburn Law, said: “We have seen first-hand clients who need support and assistance, especially concerning the early stages of dementia – when they don’t know where to go or what is available to them, whether it is support for themselves or a relative.

“Birchall Blackburn Law is well placed to pledge this support as many of our specialists have received training to become Dementia Friends Champions, giving them a high level of understanding relating to the condition.”

The group also includes representatives from the NHS, emergency services, borough councillors, care homes and hospices and charities.

Gareth Dowling, Dementia Action Alliance (DAA) Coordinator for Lancashire, said: “We know the number of people living with dementia is only going to grow, and it’s so important communities pull together to support our families, our neighbours and ultimately ourselves.”
